To simply put it, water softeners work to replace the calcium and magnesium ions in your water with sodium ions. Sodium ions do not have the adverse effects that calcium and magnesium ions have, so the problems you see with hard water are eliminated with water softeners. As water travels throughout your home's pipes, the ion replacement occurs and the calcium and magnesium ions are trapped in a resin bed. The trapped ions are eventually flushed from the system.
